FROM THE CAVES & THE SKULL Both Jack and Graham were powerful swimmers and with their flippers it did not take them long to reach the cave, which they then entered with a certain amount of trepidation, because they were mindful of the fact that this place was said to be dangerous. After surfacing, they were able to take stock of their surroundings which appeared to them unremarkable simply the four rocky walls of a cave and the sea swirling and lapping at the bottom. They took their time working around the waterline, using the lights from their masks, their hands, and what light there was from the entrance to the cave, to examine their new environment. Just underneath the waterline they were able to feel places where additional rocks jutted out from the sides of the rock walls. It took them quite a while and they noted the almost submerged entrances to two more caves which they assumed would become more accessible as the tide receded. Slightly above them to the right was an entrance to another cave, which they decided to go and explore. Just as they were about to get out of the water, Jack felt a sting on his thigh. “Oh bother!” he thought to himself, “that must have been one of those razor sharp rocks hope nothing is torn!” He turned to signal and warn Graham, but as he turned to mouth and gesture the warning, he felt his tongue start to tingle and he seemed to have great difficulty opening his mouth to form words. Graham appeared to be drifting in front of Jack, but he was not taking any notice of what Jack was trying to do. He tried to put his arm out towards Graham but his arm refused to obey and his surroundings became fuzzier and fuzzier until he finally lapsed into unconsciousness. While Jack drifted into a coma, Graham was also fighting for control of his own body. He was experiencing severe pains across his chest and all his muscles were cramping up with what he vaguely thought must have been the cold temperature of the water. He tried to struggle towards Jack, but he never made it before he too blacked out. Want to read more? |
